CEDAR LAP SIDING PRICES
Understanding our Prices
We price cedar lap siding by the square foot. Give us a call to speak with one of our wood siding experts about price per square foot. If you know your approximate square footage, our wood siding experts can multiply it by the price per square foot so that you have a better idea of what your cedar lap siding will cost you. Price per square foot changes based on quantity or volume ordered. The finish price may include your cedar lap siding plus one coat factory stained or primed.
Shiplap, Dutch Lap & Channel Rustic
Cedar Lap Pattern Prices
We give “ballpark” prices to help you plan your project. Due to global uncertainty we are unable to guarantee those prices because prices may fluctuate. Price is only locked in once you've placed your order.
Please call 877-960-9663 or email sales@buffalolumber.com for updated pricing on all projects. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
The finish price may include your cedar wood siding plus one coat factory stained or primed.
If you select PRIME + PAINT, the Primer coat will be evenly applied on all 4 sides. When its time for top paint coat, the machine's bottom jets are turned down to make sure the top coat is even thickness with no splash back. This will minimize the paint that gets on the backside and under laps. We recommend factory prime plus one top coat with a 2nd coat after installation in field.
LAP SIDING includes 4 Pattern Profiles: ShipLap, Dutch Lap, Channel Rustic Lap and Nickel Gap (Shadow Gap)

Dutch Lap (German Lap & Cove Lap)
SHIPLAP "Flush Joint" PATTERN
Ship Lap Siding is a type of Drop Lap siding with a tight "flush joint" profile. The boards form a tight join when installed. It is similar to tongue and groove but with a single over lapping edge - usually 1/2" in depth but can me more or less depending on the width of the board 6", 8", 10".
Ship-lap siding can be installed horizontally or vertically with the edge of one board having a recessed area which receives the shaped top edge of the board next to or below it, so as to exclude water during rainfall.
In vertical applications, be sure to bevel cut the ends and install the shiplap siding so water is directed to the outside. Shiplap is known for its ability to form a tight seal while allowing the wood siding to "breath" with changes in season and humidity.
You might be wondering why our Buffalo diagrams above have letters - A, B, C - instead of actual measurements. That is because siding measurements can vary from mill to mill and lumber yard to lumber yard. Using letters allows us to confirm the TRUE dimensions with the mill before we sell to our customers.
Sometimes called Nickel Gap, Shadow Gap, Shadow Profile, Shadow Line and Small Reveal this is a custom milled shiplap profile that includes a narrow gap where the boards overlap. When installed a "shadow line" effect is created.
The diagram below outlines the joins between the installed boards. "G" is the custom milled gap which can vary based on the "shadow line" emphasis the customer is looking for - but is usually narrow often only 3/16 - 3/8 inch.

DUTCH LAP Siding which is also known as COVE Lap and GERMAN Lap and simply pattern "105" by WWPA (Western Wood Products Association) is distinguished by its curved "reveal" or channel between the installed boards. From a distance it gives a slightly rustic "log" impression.
Dutch Lap Siding has 3/8” overlap with a 1 1/4” curved recessed edge. The Dutch Lap pattern provides excellent weather protection and installs with a minimal amount of effort and material wastage.
Dutch Lap siding is normally supplied in unseasoned knotty grades with a saw textured face side. Commonly available sizes are 1x6", 1 x 8" and 1 x 10".
CHANNEL RUSTIC LAP Siding has 1/2” overlap and a 1” to 1 1/4” reveal that when installed creates a channel effect between siding boards. Channel Lap is often chosen for its rustic rough-hewn, textured appearance.
The width of the channel is usually one inch wide but can be more depending on the width of the board 8", 10" and custom profile.
Channel siding installs with a minimal amount of effort and material wastage. The Channel pattern is traditionally installed horizontally with the edge of one board having a recessed area along its rear which receives the shaped top-rear edge of the board next to or below it, so as to exclude water during rainfall
CEDAR SIDING GRADES
Cedar Lap Siding Grades
(The Buffalo Lumber Interpretation)
We created Buffalo Lumber's four interpreted grade categories to describe wood grades for different softwood species - especially cedar - in terms a layman can understand because there are several lumber ruling bodies (WWPA, WCLIB, NLGA, NSLB, RIS, NeLMA, SPIB) and most grade descriptions read like lawyer fine print - allowing a lot of room for interpretation.
CLEAR CEDAR
Highest Grade Fewest Knots - is the top of the line wood. This is an architect grade. This is the rarest part of the tree- the hardest to get- the best performing and the most expensive option. Your appearance and performance priorities determine your budget with clear grades. Clear and Clear Vertical Grain (CVG) are the Highest appearance grades we have.
But even CLEAR grades rules allow knots. They may be tiny, they may be few but they are allowed in grade rules.
NEAR Clear has very few, very tiny knots and a median price point for the "Knot so fond". Your appearance priorities will determine your budget with clear grades.
There is a lot of Clear in the Near Clear grades- a good trimmer can create the effect of clear and still be under 10% trim and waste (in our opinion).
Near Clear Cedar is the one step down from CLEAR cedar - a D&BTR mill siding grade that customers can use to save serious bucks.
Our STK Tight Knot Grade - "Mill Select" means the mill has selected the wood to meet the "Tight Knot" grade rule in the books.
There is no limit to the number of knots but there is a limit to the size and the type of knot. Other grade names that equate to our definition of "Mill Select" are STK (Select Tight Knot) Select Knotty and #2 and better.
Mill Select is graded to meet the “Tight Knot” description in any given rule book and is the first official “Appearance Grade” tier for projects where codes have to be met.
Our Buffalo Budget Knotty Grade is a "No Prior Selection" tight knot grade. That means that the mill has not officially graded to be "Select Tight Knot" by the rule book as is done with "Mill Select" grades.
Buffalo "Customer Select" means you the customer spend the time selecting out defect from a higher grade saving the mill time and you dollars.
You will get a few loose knots but nothing that would threaten a 10-15% job site trim and waste margin.
Life teaches 1 rule: It costs 10 TIMES MORE to fix something that goes wrong than it would to do the job the exact right way in the first place. Buffalo Lumber offers a comprehensive system to do cedar wood siding the right way and it starts with factory finish. Why put your building and your wallet at risk?

How Much is Your Peace of Mind Worth?
YOU HAVE TO BACK SEAL! IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO THE JOB RIGHT YOU CANNOT FINISH BETTER THAN MACHINES CAN!!
The biggest and most frequent mistake we see people make is thinking they can just tack cedar siding up and stain the face to save money. This is the Worst Thing you can Possibly do with Wood Siding!
The problem is water. Water gets behind the wood and causes problems. By the time you realize there is a problem the cost to repair it is in the thousands or tens of thousands.
99% of all reported siding failures are installation related. That puts a pretty big onus on preparation. Doing the job exactly the right way is worth its weight in gold when you consider that anything that goes wrong costs multiple thousands of dollars to address.
8 hours a day, 5 days a week we get calls about wood siding and the number 1 reported reason we get called is the wood siding on the house now is failing because it was not sealed on the back.
The average cost for one of our customers to repair cedar siding is well over $5000. We have a $5000 order minimum + they have labor.

COVERAGE
BUYER BEWARE WARNING: There are wood siding industry guidelines for actual "dressed" widths and "Exposed Face" measurements but individual mills often have their own pattern standards which vary from the norm. When you get ready to buy be sure to ASK for the exposed width to make sure you are buying enough to complete the job!
Calculating SQFT and LFT
Cedar Siding is often sold by the linear (or lineal) foot in 6", 8" and sometimes 10" and 12" widths. These widths are called NOMINAL "in name only" measurements. The ACTUAL or "dressed" width will be less. Be sure to confirm the DRESSED pattern measurements with the mill or lumber yard BEFORE you buy. Running a hundred SQFT short can cost $$$$ if custom milling and shipping are involved.
A FACTORY FINISH ensures a lasting, higher quality job than traditional "on site" stain or prime applications. Factory finishing costs about half the amount of field staining. Pre-finishing your cedar siding eliminates the problems of...
Common Sense Wood Siding Seasoning, Storage and Installation Tips for Do It Yourself Homeowner and Builder
It's not rocket science but it has to be done right. Our DIY Customers sometimes do a better job than professionals because they take the time to read the instructions and do the job exactly right. You have to take your time with wood.
My name is Michael Ethridge and I work for Phillips Partnership PC. We are the shell architect of record for a developer of Whole Foods Market neighborhood shopping centers. Our client and the design team wanted the “wood look” in a modern design but was concerned about cost and maintenance issues associated real wood veneer. We were looking at faux wood products, but I wanted to use real wood.
It’s difficult to win that argument with a cost-conscious client without expertise so we brought in Buffalo Lumber to consult. Chris and his team walked us through every step of the process, including specifications, detailing, and pricing.
By the end of the process our team was ready to do the entire shopping center in real cedar siding rainscreen system.
From concept to completion, they were an invaluable resource. They intervened when our site visit reports and punch lists showed improper installation and then used their expertise to get the installer back on track.
Buffalo Lumber has guided us through completion on three shopping centers clad with cedar siding veneer and we are currently working with them on a 4th shopping center.
If it had not been for the Buffalo Lumber team, Tech Center in Newport News Virginia, Peachtree Crossing, and North Decatur Square shopping centers would not have real cedar siding on them.

I think we should start sharing the good responses more often. So here ya go. The delivery went fine. We actually picked it up ourselves on Friday at the ABF terminal. We just had them fork the whole package on our trailer. No hand unloading at my office. We are doing a project 50 yards away from their terminal. We delivered it to our customer's home a couple of hours ago. We uncrated it and stacked it in their garage. No Damage to any of the siding!! The finish looks very nice. Our customer was happy with the finish. Thanks for controlling the chaos!!!! LOL I will send you some pictures after we get the siding on. Charlie
