QUICK T&G FAQ:
Q. What is tongue and groove siding?
A. Tongue and groove ("TNG" or "T&G") siding is a pattern that has a groove milled on one edge and a tongue milled on the other so that they fit together, and the tongue disappears into the groove when installed.
Q. Is tongue and groove siding good for exterior walls?
A. T&G is a good option for exterior. It can also be used indoors, and as a soffit material. It is the most versatile pattern we have: inside, outside, for highlights or entire walls.
Q. What’s the difference between T&G and shiplap?
A. The main difference is how you attach them to the wall. They can look identical installed, but tongue and groove will allow you to blind nail where shiplap requires a face nail in most cases. Looking at the pattern from the side, the tongue and groove will fit together-the tongue fits inside the groove. The shiplap will have a bottom lap on one side and a top lap on the other, and they lay on top of each other versus fitting together.
Q. How do you install tongue and groove siding?
A. Installation of a T&G 6" wide and smaller is done by driving the nail at an angle through the tongue side, and catching the board just below the tongue so that on the next piece, the groove fits over the nail head and you don’t see it. On a T&G 8" or larger you will have to do an additional face nail 2/3 of the way up the board in addition to the nail you hide through the tongue.
Q. What cedar grade is best for T&G siding?
A. The best cedar grade for siding is in the eye of the beholder. People who love wood's character will tell you that "Knotty" is the better grade for T&G, and others insist that clear is best. It comes down to a question of your preference- Do you like knots? (And did you know that knotty wood cost half as much as clear grades?)
Your reaction to those questions will determine the best grade for YOU to use with T&G siding.

Tongue & groove siding has both a rough and smooth face and is normally graded to the rough face (the best visible face) unless requested otherwise for a higher price.

Tongue & Groove Patterns (T&G) have the greatest variation in profile - the outline or shape of the board. How distinct or shadowed the line between the boards appears after installation depends on the shape of the edge.
