25 Years of Worry Free Performance!

Why painted WOOD siding?   Cement, vinyl, synthetic and composite manufacturers all make products that have the look and texture of wood grain. What is the appeal? The only answer I can think of is the reason I am in this business - people love real wood. It has been a reliable resource for building the homes we live in. It warms us as fuel for our fires and gives us comfort in its natural state. Trees are invaluable to us. If we take care of them and their products, they will provide us with warmth and shelter for generations.

We Are Cedar Believers!

Buffalo Lumber quotes only cedar for exterior painted wood applications. We offer 2 basic grade points for this product line: Our Mill Select (knotty) cedar and our Clear Finger Joint Cedar.

The Factory Finish process protects the wood and handles 99% of the coating. You will only have to coat the ends on the job site. What a time, labor and cost saver! With up to 30 year warranty. Now you can have real wood siding primed, painted and ready to install for the price of cedar or redwood raw.

Why you should NOT use cheaper wood for your painted siding

CEDAR is more definitely more expensive and it is just going to be hidden under the paint. So why pay more for cedar? Why not get the cheapest wood possible? Why not Pine?

Old Growth Pine Tree - 1800 New England Old Growth Pine Tree - 1800 New England
New Growth Pine Tree - wider rings New Growth Pine Tree - 2000 Everywhere

The Pine of today is NOT your grandfathers pine. Today's pine siding is milled from fast growth timber, is highly susceptible to rot, prone to cupping and worst of all it is pervasive in lumber yards.

Some of today's Cedar is also milled from new growth trees BUT cedar has a natural resistance to rot and reacts better as a siding substrate because it is less inclined to cup and bow when milled. Factory primed cedar siding is the right way to go.

Take Bart for instance - He went to the local lumber yard and talked to the guy there and was told that pine would work fine - especially if painted. He bought a bunch of 1x6" Dutch Lap Pine Siding STK grade. He even back primed the pine himself before he let them install it. It took him a month of his own time! But even though he had done everything right the PINE siding started showing signs of problems within 6 years. Read the whole story Just say NO to Pine.

Right way vs. the Cheapest Possible way
The cheapest possible way to paint exterior wood siding is to buy knotty pine, tack it up on the wall and paint just the face. That is also the worst thing you can possibly do! This is a total siding replacement needed less than 5 years after original install because it rotted out.

Pine Failure as a wood siding Paint Substrate Pine Failure as a wood siding Paint Substrate
Pine Siding + failure to BACK SEAL = DISASTER! Pine Siding + failure to BACK SEAL = DISASTER!

It also took out some of the sheathing and studs too! He had to replace the entire wall in some areas. The cost of this fix was over $40,000. THAT AINT CHEAP!

In reality the cheapest possible way long term is to do the job right in the first place. While it may cost double what unfinished pine costs, factory finished cedar is the only way to go!

Why Paint Cedar Siding?

Cedar Finish Performance facts from How to Finish by the Western Red Cedar Association (WRCLA)

Dimensional stability is the resistance of wood to swelling and shrinkage when it gains or loses moisture. Light, low-density woods such as Western Red Cedar shrink less than higher density woods. Its excellent dimensional stability is an important factor responsible for the longer life of paints on Western Red Cedar in comparison to other woods

Pitch or resin which can interfere with the bonding or penetration of a finish can be found in most softwoods but are absent in Western Red Cedar.

Surface Texture: Western Red Cedar products are available with a smooth (planed) or a textured (sawn or rough sanded) surface. As a rule, textured surfaces provide the best mechanical adhesion of the finish to the wood; for smooth surfaced Western Red Cedar, a two coat paint system is recommended.

Why choose Factory Pre-primed and Painted Cedar Siding?

Rule number ONE!
You absolutely, positively HAVE to seal all six sides of every board BEFORE you install (back, face, side, side, end, end). There are no exceptions to this rule! Forest Products Laboratory has been assessing paint durability by watching siding weather. A study published in 1994 found that Western Red Cedar Siding boards that were not exposed to weather prior to being painted and sealed on all sides were in almost-perfect condition after 20 years of exposure.

25 Years of Worry Free Performance
If we prime + do 1 top coat of paint at the factory and you do a final face coat in the field after installation you should get up to 25 years without having to worry about painting again.

Our Cedar is Kiln Dried to the level that will prevail during the lifetime of your siding. In In North America this is approximately 12% moisture content. Kiln Drying is necessary or else the moisture inside the wood can push out the paint causing it to peel and blister.

Twigs Bugs and Dirt!
Our factory provides an optimal environment for finishing. Almost every variable that can affect the quality of site applied finish is eliminated at the factory level. Humidity and temperature levels are controlled and the siding is kept out of direct sunlight. Finish application is measured to the millimeter.

Quite simply put, humans in the field cannot possibly do it as well as our factory machines and rack drying system.

Factory applied primer + 1 top coat of paint allows you to install and wait for optimal weather to apply final coat of paint in the field. If we just prime it you have to apply a paint coat within 2 weeks of install in most cases. This makes primer + 1 at the factory and a final coat in the field after installation the best possible bang for your hard earned buck.

Our 2 Cedar Grade Choices

Buffalo Lumber quotes only cedar for exterior painted wood applications. We offer 2 basic grade points for this product line: Our Mill Select (knotty) cedar and our Clear Finger Joint Cedar.

STK Mill Select Cedar Option

Mill Select (knotty) Painted Cedar is the lowest grade point you would want to use for a painted wood application. In other words this is the least expensive way to do painted wood siding the right way.

Rabbeted Bevel Western red Cedar Mill Select STK - Pre-Painted Michigan Home

1x6" Rabbeted Bevel Western red Cedar Mill Select STK - Pre-Painted "Mulberry" Home in Michigan

Fact: By the time we apply 2 coats at the factory and you do a final coat in the field the knots are only visible when you get up close.

This was our 1x8 "Mill Select" Bevel Siding with 2 coat Cabot's "Mulberry" Solid Stain applied at the factory and a final coat was done by our customer in the field after installation. As you can see from the pictures the knots are not a factor in the final appearance outcome.

Rabbeted Bevel Western red Cedar Mill Select STK - Rough Face finish close-up

Our knotty bevel options are only available sawn textured face out. But by the time you have prime plus 2 coats of paint applied the "rough" texture is not the most prominent feature. What is prominent is a very nice looking painted wood finished product.

Our LAP and tongue and groove patterns are available for prime and paint on the smooth face.

CLEAR Cedar Finger Joint Option

Western Red Cedar Finger Joint CLEAR Grade
Western Red Cedar Finger Joint CLEAR Grade

When the design calls for wood with zero knots or you need to use a smooth face bevel we quote clear finger joint cedar.

Finger Joint (FJ) has 2 major advantages:

COST- CLEAR Cedar Boards are very expensive. With Finger Joint engineering you can have CLEAR no knot cedar for a lot less $$$.

LENGTH - CLEAR Cedar is limited supply so longer lengths are expensive. Finger joint CLEAR cedar is 90% 16 and 20 foot lengths.

Scientific advancements
Years ago Finger Joint gained a poor reputation in the industry due to a problem called "telescoping". This happened when the "fingers" were on the face of the board, the glue would de-laminate and one side of the joint would pop up above the other (telescoping) causing major problems. Here is the old style with finger across the face of the board:

milled finger joint by Do It Yourself.com image courtesy of Do It Yourself
engineered finger joint WoodGears.ca image courtesy of WoodGears.ca

Along came advancements in polymer glue technology and the "fingers" were re-engineered and moved from the face to the edge of the board eliminating the risk of telescoping problem.

Now most cedar finger jointed products carry a 50 year warranty against rot, de-lamination and joint telescoping. Here is a shot of the face of our unfinished finger joint cedar board which is now free of the appearance of fingers.

Clear Finger Joint patterns

In the finger joint we primarily stick with thin bevel because they cover for less money and are available for smooth face use. We have milled other patterns for our customers including T&G and shiplap.

In some cases we can mill a thicker version of bevel but normally it is not necessary for the long term performance of the project so it becomes a design decision.

A THIN BEVEL PATTERN Smooth Face

BLC - BEVEL NO RABBET Smooth Face - Eased Edge diagram

A STANDARD BEVEL PATTERN Smooth Face

Keep in mind the thin bevel pattern is less expensive simply by virtue of the fact that we can slice more pieces out of 2x material to make it. On average I would say our thin bevel patterns are 30% to 50% less per square foot than a standard bevel of the same grade point.

Historic District Winner!

Historic renovation architect and Buffalo Lumber Customer Barry Weinstein won an award from the Highland Park Historical Society for his rehabilitation of a home in Highland Park IL using our CLEAR Western Red Cedar Finger Joint (FJ) Cedar bevel siding.

Here are some shots of that project. We factory primed and did 1 top coat and customer applied final top coat of paint in the field. He got a 50 year warranty on the siding itself and a 25 year warranty on the paint job.

The last order you sent me of about 15,000 sqft of beveled primed siding was installed on a 120 year old house. We didn't have to replace any of the existing siding, we replaced some fake stone that had been installed 80 years ago. On December 14, 2010 I will be presented with and award from the Highland Park (Chicago) historical society, for rehabilitation of this house.

I have historic, before remodeling and new pictures. You can see some interesting info at www.bweinsteinassociates.com . It's an 11,000 square foot house, stucco and wood with a large front porch.

BEVEL SIDING - PRIMED and PAINTED
Priced by SQFT

Bevel Siding is manufactured by resawing lumber at an angle to produce two pieces thicker on one edge than the other - sometimes called CLAPBOARD siding - with a thick butt and a thin upper edge lapped to shed water. The bevel edge gives an attractive shadow line. Both faces are saw textured. Cedar BEVEL siding is recommended for horizontal applications only.

Why Quote Cedar Siding in SQUARE FEET? The lumber industry is constantly changing and sizes of patterned siding vary from mill to mill so we quote everything (except Trim and Lumber) in terms of SQUARE FEET. A SQFT is the 12 inch by 12 inch area on the wall to be covered when the boards are joined or lapped. This eliminates the need to convert lineal feet to square feet in a world where the size is not constant.

Professional Factory Finish - Prime, Paint, or Stain

Factory Pre-Finish Process Diagram

Save Time!   Save time, money and job site headaches as siding arrives ready to install. If you combine workers with paint, dirt, wind, twigs and Murphy's Law you have a recipe for unexpected delays and unanticipated costs. Remove those risk factors and you can make your budget and your timeframe.

Less Maintenance!   Factory finishing allows the installer to focus on installation. Factory warranties mean you do NOT have to worry about maintenance for many years depending on brand and #coats applied.

READY TO INSTALL! The wood arrives in pristine condition - ready when your project is ready. This is the installer's dream. Minimal handling, no extended storage requirements, no worry about weather, just beautiful pre-primed pre-painted wood siding ready to be installed.

The VALUE of Factory Painted Wood Siding

¤  Pre-finished siding is protected from damage by weather
¤  Factory coating improves durability by covering all 4 sides
¤  Saves money by saving time and lowering labour costs
¤  No costly installation delays due to weather
¤  No color variation, lap marks, streaking or dirt pickup
¤  No overspray, dripping, splattering or clean-up problems
¤  The job site is neat and the project looks finished immediately

* COAT THE ENDS OF THE WOOD! * Factory Finish coats all 4 sides of the wood board. The ends may get covered too but not as fully. It is the only finish related maintenance necessary on the job site but it is crucial that it get done. The warranty is on the paint's ability to protect the wood but it can't protect where it is not applied. Protect your wood, protect your investment, COAT THE ENDS!
