FACTORY FINISH = PEACE OF MIND
How Much is Your Peace of Mind Worth?

A FACTORY FINISH ensures a lasting, higher quality job than traditional "on site" stain or prime applications. Factory finishing costs about half the amount of field staining. Pre-finishing your cedar decking eliminates the problems of lap marks, shrinklines, streaking, color variation, and job site dirt pick-up.

During factory pre-finish all four sides of the board are completely sealed, ensuring total protection. Controlled temperature and humidity levels stabilize any moisture in the wood. The finished decking arrives at the job site totally protected from exposure to water and sunlight.

FACT - All wood used in the outdoors must be protected against decay and insect attack. The first thing the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association will tell you is that cedar decking needs to be sealed on all six sides prior to installation and then re coated as needed on the face for the lifetime of the wood.

FACT - "Decks Should Be Finished for Optimal Performance
Although cedar is a naturally durable wood ideal for decks, its performance is enhanced when protected by an appropriate finish. Decks have full exposure to sun and rain, which greatly accelerates the weathering process. In fact, so aggressive are the effects of weather extremes in some areas of the country that a deck may need cleaning, restoring and refinishing as frequently as every two to five years depending upon the finish used. Decks should never be allowed to weather before finishing." from WRCLA Guide to Finishing Western Red Cedar

True Finish Cost Comparison we interviewed the owner of a professional finishing company. "If you are going to do the job right- you can't do it better (or cheaper) than the machines. If you are planning to stain instead of paint- the number of gallons needed per square foot virtually doubles. You do not have to apply a final coat to the face after installation but you had better have a large, well ventilated area with racks for the wood siding (or decking) to dry - usually 3-7 days depending on humidity and finish choice."

In the Field or In the Factory?

Can You afford Not to Factory Finish?

We interviewed Brandon Stendal- owner of Stone Valley Painting, LLC. and a customer of ours and asked-
"What is the value of factory finish?"

"Usually we are only finishing the face of the building. For us- a commercial painter- to prime coat 6 sides in the field takes about twice as long as coating the face alone after installation. We charge $50hour commercially so the price immediately doubles.

We primed all 4 sides of about 833 sqft of your wood siding and it took 2 guys about 8 hours to do this job. It took 5 gallons of primer to coat it (between $25 and $30 per gallon) and we had to rack it at our own warehouse and then transport to the jobsite.

I would actually prefer my customers to get a factory finished primer coat and then have me do the final coat in the field- that is the best wood siding performance option.

That may not sound like it is good for business but long term, happy customers are my business!"

We agree completely.

Factory staining coats 4 of six sides - You get the face, the back and both side edges, the deck board butt ends need to be sealed when installed on the jobsite.

If you are going to do the job right- you can't do it better (or cheaper) than the machines. If you are planning to stain instead of paint- the number of gallons needed per square foot virtually doubles. You do not have to apply a final coat to the after installation but you had better have a large, well ventilated area with racks for the wood siding to dry - usually 3-7 days depending on humidity and finish choice.

The fact is that sealing the wood on all six sides prior to installation is the single most important thing you can do to ensure the long term performance of your wood decking- factory finishing saves the headache factor (literally) and is the first step to doing the job right.

The truth may not be what you "want" to hear- But remember if it's worthwhile to do-

It costs 3 times as much and takes 3 times as long as you originally thought it would.

It costs 10 times as much to fix a screw up as to do things right in the first place.

The Question Is - Can You afford Not to Factory Finish?

Saving Money with Green and Partially Air Dried Wood Decking

When an order is received at the mill the wood "slats" are pulled and stickered to remove surface moisture and it becomes PAD (partially air dried). Partially means there will still be some residual moisture during the milling to pattern step.

The fact is that all wood no matter how it is dried (seasoned) will expand and contract during the year due to moisture changes in the air. The thing about PAD green woods is that they are prone to changes of greater degree than fully air dried or kiln dried lumber. Installation of Decking boards allows room for wood expansion and contraction - without compromising the overall appearance.

Get your cedar decking pre-finished. It gives added protection and makes the mill do some of the drying work for you. Before they stain the decking they stack it with sticks in between to allow airflow and dry any residual surface moisture. A 2nd benefit of factory pre-finish is that all sides of the board are coated.

FACTORY FINISH = PEACE OF MIND

Cedar Decking - PRE Stained and Ready to Install!

A FACTORY FINISH STAIN on your cedar deck boards ensures a lasting, higher quality job than traditional "on site" stain applications. Factory staining costs about half the amount of field staining. Pre-staining your cedar decking eliminates the problems of lap marks, shrinklines, streaking, color variation, and job site dirt pick-up.

All four sides of the cedar board, are completely sealed, ensuring total protection. Controlled temperature and humidity levels stabilize any moisture in the wood. The finished siding arrives at the job site totally protected from exposure to water and sunlight. Western Wood Products Association and the California Redwood Association recommend pre-finishing all wood decking including cedar!

Cedar is a durable wood, but leaving a cedar deck untreated is not recommended since finishing will greatly increase it's service life.

All pre-finished prices include one coat Stained Cabot's, Sherwin Williams or Olympic standard color lines.

Cedar Decking Coverage

Nominal WidthActual WidthLFT factor
6"5 1/2"2.1
8"7 1/4"1.6

Cedar Decking is sold by the linear (or lineal) foot. Your quantity requirements are calculated by multiplying the square foot area by the actual dressed (not nominal) board width while allowing for proper spacing between boards using a 1/4" spacer strip (or a 16 penny nail as we did when I was growing up ;-)

For example: If you are building a 20 foot wide by 40 feet long outdoor deck with 2x6" cedar decking, you would need approximately 1680 linear feet for your deck:   20 by 40 = 800 sqft * 2.1 factor. Be sure to include in an extra 10% for trim.

Common Sense Decking Installation & Maintenance Tips

The fact is that all wood no matter how it is dried (seasoned) will expand and contract during the year due to moisture changes in the air.

Allow your wood to acclimate before installation. This is the most common installation mistake and the most costly. When the wood arrives it will begin to change sizes to adjust to its new climate. The worst thing you can do is install siding during this phase. This is true of ALL seasoning grades. Allow 1 - 2 weeks for your wood to acclimate. The last thing you want to do is install it DURING the change.

Ideally you would unband the wood and sticker it for proper air flow. But if you do not have that option then leave it banded for a longer period of time. Most wood expansion and contraction is across the width of the board. After this acclimation period size changes will be seasonal and minimal. This simple step is the single most important thing to remember when installing any wood product especially PAD or GREEN boards.

Avoid moving lumber when it is raining and it should always be covered with a lumber wrap that allows air to circulate moisture out. Always keep lumber on pilings so air can circulate under the pile. Never store lumber in a room with fresh concrete or drywall. Do not store the project's exterior wood anyplace where it might be artificially heated or cooled. It must adjust to the natural conditions where it will reside.

"A deck that dries after wetting will last longer than one that stays damp. Good maintenance practices for cedar decks include allowing proper water drainage; keeping the surface free of dirt, leaves, pine-needles and other debris; and moving planters, benches and other deck accessories from time to time to permit the deck beneath them to dry thoroughly.

It is a good practice, to clean your deck once a year, in the spring, to remove dirt, mildew and other forms of discoloration. Yearly cleaning will ensure that the deck looks nice as well as prolonging the life of the protective coating. Scrubbing your deck with warm soapy water will remove dirt, but diluted household (oxygen based) bleach will be required to remove mildew, as mentioned above.

Most coating companies also manufacture deck cleaning products to complement the deck finishes they manufacture. These products called cleaners, brighteners or restorers remove different forms of discoloration without stripping the finish from the Western Red Cedar. Most of these cleaners can remove dirt and discoloration caused by mildew and algae from the surface of cedar, but they vary in their ability to remove iron and tannin stains and weathered (grey) wood from the surface of the deck. Some of these deck cleaners may actually remove wood from the weathered cedar surface and therefore you should take care when using them. Power washers can seriously damage cedar deck surfaces. This type of cleaning is NOT recommended for cedar decks or any other cedar product.

As a rule of thumb - deck surfaces should be refinished when the Western Red Cedar starts to lose its color..." WRCLA Restoring and Maintaining Cedar Decking
