Buffalo Lumber offers a comprehensive system to do cedar wood siding the right way and it starts with factory finish.
The biggest and most frequent mistake we see people make is thinking they can just tack cedar siding up and stain the face to save money. This is the
Worst Thing you can Possibly do with Wood Siding!
The problem is water. Water gets behind the wood and causes problems. By the time you realize there is a problem the cost to repair it is in the thousands or tens of thousands.
99% of all reported siding failures are installation related. That puts a pretty big onus on preparation. Doing the job exactly the right way is worth its
weight in gold when you consider that anything that goes wrong costs multiple thousands of dollars to address.
8 hours a day, 5 days a week we get calls about wood siding and the number 1 reported reason we get called is the wood siding on the house now is failing because it was not sealed on the back.
The average cost for one of our customers to repair cedar siding is well over $5000. We have a $2500 order minimum + they have labor.
Life teaches 1 rule:
It costs 10 TIMES MORE to fix something that goes wrong than it would to do the job the exact right way in the first place.

WRC Cedar Decking - Clear Vertical Grain CVG - Factory PreStained
FACTORY FINISH = PEACE OF MIND
Cedar Decking - PRE Stained and Ready to Install!
A FACTORY FINISH STAIN on your cedar deck boards ensures a lasting, higher quality job than traditional "on site" stain
applications. Factory staining costs about half the amount of field staining. Pre-staining your cedar decking eliminates the
problems of lap marks, shrinklines, streaking, color variation, and job site dirt pick-up.
All four sides
of the cedar board, are completely sealed, ensuring total protection. Controlled temperature and humidity levels
stabilize any moisture in the wood. The finished siding arrives at the job site totally protected from exposure to water and sunlight.
Western Wood Products Association and the California Redwood Association
recommend pre-finishing all wood decking including cedar!
Cedar is a durable wood, but leaving a cedar deck untreated is not recommended since finishing will greatly increase it's service life.
All pre-finished prices include one coat Stained Cabot's, Sherwin Williams or Olympic standard color lines.
Saving Money with Green and Partially Air Dried Wood Decking
When an order is received at the mill the wood "slats" are pulled and stickered to remove surface moisture and it becomes PAD (partially air dried).
Partially means there will still be some residual moisture during the milling to pattern step.
The fact is that all wood no matter how it is dried (seasoned) will expand and contract during the year due to moisture changes
in the air. The thing about PAD green woods is that they are prone to changes of greater degree than fully air dried or kiln dried
lumber. Installation of Decking boards allows room for wood expansion and contraction - without compromising the overall
Get your cedar decking pre-finished. It gives added protection
and makes the mill do some of the drying work for you. Before they stain the decking
they stack it with sticks in between to allow airflow and dry any residual surface moisture. A 2nd benefit of factory pre-finish
is that all sides of the board are coated.
Cedar Decking Coverage
|Nominal Width||Actual Width||LFT factor
Cedar Decking is sold by the linear (or lineal) foot. Your quantity requirements are calculated by multiplying the square foot area
by the actual dressed (not nominal) board width while allowing for proper spacing between boards using a 1/4" spacer strip (or a 16 penny nail as we did when I was growing up ;-)
If you are building a 20 foot wide by 40 feet long outdoor deck with 2x6" cedar decking, you would need approximately
1680 linear feet for your deck: 20 by 40 = 800 sqft * 2.1 factor. Be sure to include in an extra 10% for trim.

Common Sense Decking Installation & Maintenance Tips
The fact is that all wood no matter how it is dried (seasoned) will expand and contract during the year due to moisture changes in the air.
Allow your wood to acclimate before installation. This is the most common installation mistake and the most costly. When the wood arrives it will begin
to change sizes to adjust to its new climate. The worst thing you can do is install siding during this phase. This is true of ALL seasoning grades.
Allow 1 - 2 weeks for your wood to acclimate. The last thing you want to do is install it DURING the change.
Ideally you would unband the wood and sticker it for proper air flow. But if you do not have that option then leave it banded for a longer
period of time. Most wood expansion and contraction is across the width of the board. After this acclimation period size changes will be seasonal and minimal.
This simple step is the single most important thing to remember when installing any wood product especially PAD or GREEN boards.
Avoid moving lumber when it is raining and it should always be covered with a lumber wrap that allows air to circulate moisture out. Always
keep lumber on pilings so air can circulate under the pile. Never store lumber in a room with fresh concrete or drywall. Do not store the project's
exterior wood anyplace where it might be artificially heated or cooled. It must adjust to the natural conditions where it will reside.
"A deck that dries after wetting will last longer than one that stays damp. Good maintenance practices for cedar decks include allowing proper water drainage;
keeping the surface free of dirt, leaves, pine-needles and other debris; and moving planters, benches and other deck accessories from time to time to permit
the deck beneath them to dry thoroughly.
It is a good practice, to clean your deck once a year, in the spring, to remove dirt, mildew and other forms of discoloration. Yearly cleaning will ensure that the
deck looks nice as well as prolonging the life of the protective coating. Scrubbing your deck with warm soapy water will remove dirt, but diluted household (oxygen based)
bleach will be required to remove mildew, as mentioned above.
Most coating companies also manufacture deck cleaning products to complement the deck finishes they manufacture.
These products called cleaners, brighteners or restorers remove different forms of discoloration without stripping the finish from the Western Red Cedar. Most of these cleaners can
remove dirt and discoloration caused by mildew and algae from the surface of cedar, but they vary in their ability to remove iron and tannin stains and weathered (grey) wood from
the surface of the deck. Some of these deck cleaners may actually remove wood from the weathered cedar surface and therefore you should take care when using them.
Power washers can seriously damage cedar deck surfaces. This type of cleaning is NOT recommended for cedar decks or any other cedar product.
As a rule of thumb - deck surfaces should be refinished when the Western Red Cedar starts to lose its color..."
