Buffalo Lumber Original - Red Cedar U-Grade

Our Buffalo Lumber U-Grade is a new type of lumber opportunity. We have been involved in the grading of wood for generations. The science has evolved to being able to offer discount prices for the creative do-it-your-selfer who knows how to work a saw to create beautiful red cedar paneling results with these grading techniques.

Our discounted U-grade is a Pre- Grade Western Red Cedar paneling. Each Red Cedar bundle contains a mix of #1, #2 & BTR, and downgrade panels. Each board will be touched. Most boards will need at least one cut. The U-Grade/Up-Grade numbers shake out like this:

50% comes in above grade needing little work
30% can be reclaimed by saw
5-10% can be reclaimed for trim
5-10% waste

This is an opportunity for cedar lovers to get beautiful western red cedar at discount prices if they are willing to work with the wood.

These hard flaws make up less than 5% of the coverage area. You can see in the pictures shown that trimming around the rough patches still gives you 90% of that stick to use.

U-Grade: Step-by-Step

We got into this red cedar because it was absolutely beautiful. Red cedar is so expensive on the open market that we wanted to find alternatives for our customers and ourselves.

OH we had some BIG flaws, dry rot all the way through, splits, gaping holes over 4 inches in diameter, tongues were split down the side of the board, 12 to 30 inch runs of rot and peck – IT WAS BEAUTIFUL!

If that first paragraph scared you, read no further.

We are finding roughly 50% comes out very nice and 50% needs work to make useful. It is the 50% needing work that we will focus on.

The value of this wood lies entirely in the philosophy of the person using it. Some people will not like the look nor see the value. Some people (like us) will absolutely love it!

It is beautiful cedar wood at a 30 to 50% price savings. We sell price. Most people love it, some do not. Our job is to clearly communicate our red cedar wood paneling and not waste anyone's time or money.

1. Sorting the Wood

This is the first unit off the truck. Some of the tongues were rough and some of the pieces had deep flaws but the overall quality was great. As we moved the wood into the shop we looked at each stick, evaluating for penertrating flaws. Each bundle contains a single stick length from 8 to 16 foot long.

As we brought the wood inside we separated it into 2 main piles. The first pile had no visible flaws. It worked out to be about 50% of the unit. We did not look for grades only structural flaws - are the tongues and grooves intact and are the sticks usable with no additional work.

The 2nd pile had at least one penettrating flaw and needed work in some way. It was roughly 30% of the unit.

And then there was the 3rd pile with some BIG flaws, dry rot all the way through, splits, holes over 4 inches in diameter, tongues split down the side of the board, 12 to 30 inch runs of rot and peck. About 20% of the bundle. This is where the fun begins!

2. Planning Your Project

Look at the whole project.

Identify where you will be using shorter pieces of Red Cedar paneling - corners, doorways, nooks is where loss is reduced. As you can see every project requires many different lengths of wood.

The next step in the grading process is to start the project using the flaw pile. Starting with the trim pile allows you to combine grading with the need to cut the wood anyway.

We begin with areas we have planned a tight knot look; this allows us to up grade during the natural cutting process. Ready? Now we pulled our clunkers.

Here are pictures of the worse types of flaws you will need to work around. These hard flaws make up less than 10% of the coverage area.

3. Cutting Your Wood

Cut the various sizes needed for your project keeping an eye out for the good stuff. Set the clear grades aside for later. You can see in the pictures that trimming around the rough patches still gives you 90% of that stick to use.

Here are 4 sticks. The 3 on the left represent the worst of the flaws we encountered (most were under 6 inches). You can see how much clear is actually in those pieces, Look at the 2 with the smaller flaws. How many knots do you see?

Total trim out was 3 and ½ feet out of 24. 15 feet of B and better (with over 10 feet of clear) and 5 and ½ feet of STK.

Of the 4 sticks shown (all 8 footers) one is perfect, two have less than 6 inch flaws and one has a 2 foot flaw. Of 32 linear feet only 3 feet is unusable (9%). Character wood lovers could use that 3 feet too.

4. Admire Your Results!

Look at the penetrating flaws. Now look at the rest of those sticks. Trim out those flaws and you have some clear grade, B-grade and some STK (Select Tight Knot) to use. Clear grade goes for well over $2.00 a lineal foot on the open market.

You rip it for trim. Cut the tongue and groove off with a 1 inch rip down the length of the board on each side. Now you have a 1 inch tongue piece and a 1 inch groove piece with a 2 and ½ + piece in the middle.

If you reverse the tongue and groove and put them together you have a 2 inch piece of custom trim with a groove running down the middle of it. You can use the tongue piece alone as trim around light sockets and switches.

If you have a project for interior and exterior use and you love working with wood you can get 95% usability out of this grade using the techniques listed here and creative determination.

We say factor 10% waste and then don’t waste any.

BIG NASTY KNOTS

Give me the ugly stuff, your peck and your rot, your splits and your gloom,

I will have a great time and a beautiful room.

I will paint the back black and put it up on the walls, gaping 4 inch holes and all.

I will take the rot and the peck and THE BIG NASTY KNOTS, and put them in the MOST VISIBLE SPOTS!

I can use splits because I can hold one piece with two, I can know where not to put a nail, I can glue.

I can use almost everything and then, I can take a table saw and rip tongues and grooves to make trim.

When I am through it will look so good, people will ask where did you find such beautiful wood?

In my reply, I will say with a smile, “I found this wood in another mans trash pile”.
