Discount Cedar Siding in Tennessee!
If you have been looking for a Cedar Siding Opportunity - THIS IS IT!

Buffalo Lumber has located another supply of beautiful Discount #3 grade Incense Cedar Siding. It actually exceeds the quality of our very popular discount cedar that SOLD OUT last year. We were so impressed with the paneling possibilities of the smooth face that we bought inventory going into the slow season. Imagine that clean, spicy cedar aroma thoughout your winter retreat. This golden incense cedar wood is perfect for any siding or paneling project from rustic cabin to elegant vacation home.

Our 1x6" T&G Siding pattern is a best seller because of its versatility. It can be used indoors or outdoors, rough side or smooth side, installed horizontally, vertically or diagonally, to provide distinctly different looks. The board edges are usually V-shaped or "beveled". Tongue & Groove siding has both a rough and smooth face and is graded to the rough face. Knotty grades are popular for their warm, rustic look.

Buffalo Lumber's incense cedar siding meets our Buffalo Lumber "Customer U-GRADE" requirements. Our incense cedar special is a #3 & Better grade. I have identified the downgrade flaws that you could encounter working with this cedar siding grade.

If you know your way around a saw you can maximize your "and better" stock for use in high visibility areas. Our cedar siding is not perfect. Some boards will have small knot holes as well as chips, dings and nicks, usually on the siding edges, hidden when installed as exterior home siding or interior cedar paneling. You will have to deal with something on every board to make it work.

We are pleased to say that we can offer this wood to our customers with savings that you haven't seen in a long time. Our 1x6" Tongue and Groove cedar inventory is in limited supply. Opportunities like these won't last long and in today's market they may never be this good again.

1x6" T&G Incense Cedar Siding - units being inspected

Buffalo Lumber's White Incense Cedar
Customer U-GRADE

When we got into the units we were very happy to see that they are in good shape on both smooth and rough side. As the guys got down into a long unit the quality on this load looks to be better than the last one we did. I was very pleased to see the smooth side so nice. There are still flaws the most common being wane and loose knots but this looks to be the best overall quality we've had yet.

Buffalo Lumber's Customer U-GRADE means You grade it. It is low grade lumber run to pattern. You will see holes up to the size of a 50 cent piece. There will be holes allowed in every board. U grade is usually priced at 50% of the market. We say to factor at least 20% safety margin on a U-Grade project. Net savings 30% over retail market prices.

incense cedar siding knot flaw

Layman terms - if we were talking about a 1x6" wide by 12' long board, U-GRADE would allow a knot every 4 inches - some larger than a silver dollar. It will allow some peck and rot and a few other things. Every board will need to be trimmed.

incense cedar siding knot flaw

If you are a customer who really LOVES to work with wood and are willing to use knot putty you can get up to 95% use from this cedar grade (I know we did - just not always the intended use if you know what I mean). U-grade is for rustic wood lovers who appreciate the character look of natural wood flaws and who want to work around flaws to save money on real wood appearance products. Not for the timid. Warm up your saw arm.

California Incense Cedar is one of the most stable wood species. It’s thermal conductivity rating or (K factor) is among the best of all softwoods. This provides dependable, predictable insulating properties and resistance to heat migration which positively impact performance of the species under machining conditions as well as gluing and drying.

incense cedar siding boards

Incense cedar stands up to wider variations in temperature and humidity without warping, checking or shrinking then most softwoods. This allows for tighter size tolerances and easy shipment to and use in many regions of the world where there are varying climates. Finally, the smoothly machined surface and relative lack of resin canals and pitch pockets assure that cedar products can be easily painted or stained with oil or water based stains to a fine, smooth finish without bleeding or other problems.

PECKY Cedar Wood Paneling

pecky incense cedar paneling

We have had requests for Pecky cedar from people who are looking for that rustic appeal. We decided to run pecky incense cedar board to a LAP pattern for easy install as interior paneling and offer it to people who want that “old wood look” in their home.

The peck patterns you see are caused by a dry rot specific to the heartwood of incense cedar. The spread ceases once the tree has been harvested and processed. The result is an unusual, textured and very unique paneling. These amber & rose colored cedar boards with their subtle spicey aroma and distinctive natural growth patterns offer Old World country charm at a price you can afford!

1x8" SHIP LAP PECKY Cedar Paneling

If you have been looking for Rustic & Unique - THIS IS IT!

Our PECKY incense cedar is a 1x8" ship lap pattern. Shiplap looks like Tongue & Groove center-match (no beveled edge) paneling but is easier to install since some pieces will have edges that are affected by the peck.

Pecky Cedar Wood is the result of airborne spores that infect older incense cedar trees through an injury to the bark usually caused by fire, insects or birds. A conk grows out into a shelflike project from the side of the tree while the infection inside slowly causes decay in the heartwood in the form of elongated vertical pockets. Because only the heartwood is affected, the tree continues to grow and rarely falls.

Most pecky cedar trees are at least 150 years old. The decay process stops when the tree is cut and KILN DRIED. Pecky cedar wood milled into lumber or paneling is stable and will not experience further decay.

When the board is milled into paneling some of the dried heartwood flakes out. You can see that in the pictures below. This is basically sawdust that can be brushed off and vacuumed up once your paneling has been installed.

Buffalo Lumber's PECKY incense cedar siding meets our Buffalo Lumber "Customer U-GRADE" requirements.
Our incense cedar special is a #3 & Better grade. Again an aggressive use policy would apply here (Meaning try to use every board) but it looks like 90% can be installed as is and the rest with some creative cutting.

We inspected the units and were please with the rich tones and unique patterns created. The amount of peck varies from board to board. You can select as you go to create the desired affect in each room.

The pecky cedar is freshly milled. You will notice some flakes as you unpack and as you install but a good shop vac session after you are done should do the trick.

This Pecky grade is not for the timid however if you are looking for that rustic charm - this is really neat looking stuff. There will be some holes in this wood so you will need to be a little creative when nailing it up.

ABOUT Buffalo Lumber

Square Foot Coverage by Pattern

Your volume - the square feet (SQFT) or Linear Feet (LFT) - you need to buy is calculated by multiplying the square foot area by a "factor" which is calculated from the "exposed" width of your size and specific pattern. "Exposed face" is the part of the siding still visible after the board is installed.

A) Calculate the square footage in walls: length x height = SQFT
B) Calculate, and then subtract, the square footage of openings
C) Add at least 10% to cover trim and waste (suggest 20% ugrade)
D) Multiply the result by the factor for lineal feet

* Lineal Foot Factor is derived by dividing 12” by the exposed face

Example: If you are siding six walls 8 feet high by 40 feet long with 1x6" T&G boards and we allow 10% of the total square feet for openings, you would need approximately 3100 linear feet:

6 * 8 * 40 = 1920 SQ FT - 192 (10% openings) + 346 (20% trim/waste) = 2074 SQFT * 2.40 linear factor = 4978 LFT
